So check that the software of your choice is on the right list before upgrading: The list for Intel-based Macs is much longer than the one for M1 Macs.

The new M1 Macs are also still a bit behind in terms of pro software that is compatible with these Blackmagic video I/O devices.

The following list gives a detailed overview of which models the M1 Macs work with and which ones only work with Intel-powered Macs for now: However, there are some limitations under MacOS 11.0 Big Sur.

The latest Blackmagic Desktop Video 12.0 finally supports the latest M1-powered Macs and offers compatibility with many different hardware devices and applications.

To be able to output a legal video signal from your computer, you will most likely need some kind of external hardware that supports correct 10bit Rec.709 video signals Blackmagic, of course, has a whole range of solutions on offer that can do just that (and more): Their Ultrastudio line of I/O devices, for example. Blackmagic Desktop Video 12.0 is available for download free of charge.

Make sure you’re familiar with how to open the shutter with live view.Blackmagic Design has just released an updated version of their suite of desktop video drivers for several of their hardware solutions to output proper video signals. In my case, additional confusion came from using the Canon 60d and checking the live output was working - as soon as you plug in the hdmi then the camera viewer goes blank. Once you have the correct settings, open izzy, live capture and select the correct capture settings.⁃ close BMME, open BM Desktop Video, check same settings are being registered ⁃ you should see the settings in the bottom left of BMME, or if in doubt, capture a small clip, then look at the clip info BM devices can only be accessed by one piece of software at a time - if you can’t see the feed in BMME, make sure to quit izzy / other programs.Use BM Media Express to check the video settings being streamed through Intensity from your camera / input.

⁃ This will allow you to install BlackMagic Media Express at the same time

So it sat in box for 6 months until I got bored last night. Initially, after installing the drivers, all I was getting was a long list of Black Magic inputs in live capture, none of which appeared to work. I was trying to get a HDMI out from my canon 60D into isadora via the Intensity shuttle usb. (if anyone has any more useful links, please add them to comments) Some elements of this were mentioned in different posts on this forum and others, but I thought I’d try bring it together. Just archiving my setup here as I finally got it to work:
